Prato has long specialised in carded yarn, recycled wool and fancy yarns, and the district's spinning mills do not sell only to large knitwear factories. Part of their range is in stock in standard colours, part is left over from previous seasons and sold as stock lots, and for larger orders yarn is dyed to the colour you need. Spinners present new collections at Pitti Filati in Florence: according to Pitti Immagine, in 2027 it runs on 20-22 January and 23-25 June. We buy yarn on cones for yarn shops, marketplace sellers, knitwear studios and small producers. For each item you get the fibre content, yarn count, metres per kilo, price per kilo, availability by colour and the minimum per colour. Yarn from several spinners is combined into one consignment and shipped together.

The invoice comes directly from the spinner or warehouse. Our commission of 7 to 10% is a separate line, with no hidden mark-up.
Questions about buying yarn
What does a yarn count such as Nm 2/28 mean?
In Italy yarn thickness is usually given in the metric Nm system: how many metres of yarn there are in one gram. 2/28 means two ends of count 28 are twisted together, and the finished yarn gives about 14,000 metres per kilo. The higher the number, the finer the yarn.
What minimum per colour do spinners have?
From stock you can often buy from a few kilos per colour, and sometimes even a single cone. For custom dyeing the minimum is considerably higher and depends on the spinner and the fibre. We request the exact terms for each item before you order.
How is stock-lot yarn different from in-stock yarn?
In-stock yarn is part of the spinner's continuous programme, so you can reorder it later. Stock-lot yarn is leftovers: the quantity is limited, and the same colour and dye lot usually cannot be repeated. The price is lower, but for one garment or collection it is best to buy the full quantity at once.
Why does yarn on cones sometimes feel stiff or oily?
Yarn for machine knitting is often treated with oil or wax so it runs better through the machine. After knitting the garment is washed and the yarn becomes softer. We ask the supplier whether the yarn is treated and state it in the description.
Can I see the collections at Pitti Filati?
Yes. At Pitti Filati in Florence spinners show new yarns and colours seasons ahead. We can accompany you to the fair, interpret at the stands and set up meetings, or, if you are not travelling, collect shade cards from the spinners you are interested in.
Do you work with buyers from Russia and Belarus?
Yes, within EU rules. We check every item against the EU export restrictions in force for Russia and Belarus and screen the parties to the deal against EU sanctions lists.
